On Thursday 25th March 2010, the first day of wine-tasting dedicated exclusively to Burgundy and Jura wines from organic and bio-dynamic agriculture took place in Santenay.
It was at the Domaine Chapelle (held by the Chapelle family since 1893) that this first edition of L'Essence des Sens took place, a professional tasting exclusively dedicated to wines from organic and bio-dynamic agriculture.
Organized by Muriel Deléger, daughter of a winemaker and involved in the defence of the environment and the promotion of natural growing methods, the event assembled together 35 exhibitors representing the Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits, Val de Saône, Mâconnais, Beaujolais, Chablis-Auxerrois and Jura appelations. Throughout the day, the new vat-house of the Domaine Chapelle spacious, light and perfectly functional - witnessed a procession of 300 visitors (importers, merchants, agents, wine shops, professional tasters and sommeliers, restaurants owners and journalists) from the whole world - and notably from Japan - come to discover this fine flowering of organic wines from Burguny and Jura.
Besides its commercial aspect, L'Essence des Sens sees itself as an educational tool and Muriel Deléger had foreseen a lecture space at the Château de la Crée (taken over in 2004 by Béatrice and Nicolas Ryhiner) and only a few meters distant. Contributors spoke one after another to explain to listeners the implications of organic and bio-dynamic agriculture, the stages of conversion and the future of wines from natural methods. These contributors were, notably, Bernard Hudelot (President of Vitagora Vigne et Vin, Univesity of Bourgogne - and winegrower-oenologist at Villars-Fontaine), who explained at length the recent scientific advances in terms of wine and health; Philippe Guigue (controller-auditor of ECOCERT), who detailed the workings of certificating bodies and the new European cahier des charges and Pierre Fenals (wine merchant and bio-dynamic grower in St Aubin), who shared his field experience.
Exhibitors and visitors alike were delighted with their day. The next edition is already programmed : it will take place on 17th - 18th March 2012, right in the heart of Beaune.
